SUNDAY SPORTS: USA eliminated from 2012 Davis Cup

The United States were eliminated from 2012 Davis Cup competition Sunday, losing 3-1 to defending champions Spain. Davis Cup began in 1900 and is one of the premiere annual team competitions in sports, held every year between February and November. The United States is the most successful country in Davis Cup history with 32 titles, the most recent coming in 2007, while Spain has reached the final round for the fourth time in five years.

John Isner, America’s number one guy

American players are, as always, under the most scrutiny in New York, where this year there is a new face atop the men’s game.

For the past eleven seasons, excluding a handful of weeks where James Blake and Mardy Fish dawned the crown, Andy Roddick has been not only the top ranked American male tennis player, but the only American player relevant at big tournaments.

Roddick turns thirty this Thursday, and the new era of American tennis has begun to emerge.
