5 Scary or Halloween-themed Disney Channel Originals

In movies, TV, writing on 10/17/2012 at 18:15

I looked over a list of Disney Channel Original Movies last night, for fun, and quickly realized there aren’t nearly as many quality picks as I’d imagined. Of the dozen or so I really enjoyed, though, five of them were released in October and had ghoulish themes. What better time of year to revisit them?

HONORABLE MENTION
“Susie Q” (1996)

Susie Q

“Susie Q,” released right before “The Paper Brigade,” was one of the last two Disney Premiere Films, as they were called from the early 80’s, not nearly as frequent as the ’97 onset of DOMs. It was about this hot ghost from the 50’s or something, who could only talk to one kid, this 30 year old dude who plays a high school student.

“Susie Q” wasn’t that scary, but it featured the pink power ranger in a hot prom dress for 80 or so minutes. There was also something kinky about the fact she appeared in his bedroom randomly, and the kid’s mom couldn’t see her.

I knew I wasn't making that up............

A scary story

In fiction, writing on 10/16/2012 at 21:06

Here is another horror story I’ve cooked up for the Halloween season. This one I’m very proud of, it’s the largest scoped story I’ve finished in several years. I’m calling it “Man Hunt and Moon Men” for now, but it’s changed a great deal in the year+ I’ve been working on it, so that title doesn’t work as well now.

*I’m considering: “Man Hunt, Moon Men and Mania”, “House on Moira Lane”, “The Tale of the Manic Man” and “The Tale of the Empty Houses.”

Like , I’ll be submitting this, so it will only be up for October! Please read, and SUGGEST A TITLE.

“Manhunt and Moon Men*”
The summer I saw aliens was spent, in part, groping for words to explain the language of idle bike chains cruising down Heather Hill passed unknown new neighbors watering old gardens, planted forever ago, like 1988. That summer was a lot of groping. Read the rest of this entry »

Top 10 Tuesday: Halloween Specials

In movies, TV, writing on 10/03/2012 at 16:30

For the next three weeks I will be counting down 30 of my favorite Halloween specials. These include both movies and Halloween episodes of my favorite shows. Without further adieu….

30. Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet the Wolfman
While (obviously) on the more childish side of Halloween entertainment, “Wolfman” recalls the best part of Halloween—that is, being a child!

On holidays, the whole world seems to transform when you are young. My obsession with Halloween no doubt stems from those late afternoons, mom painstakingly finishing up my vampire makeup (a ghostly foundation, some dainty lips and a grotesque, infected gash), then walking out into the evening with your new body. Holding my dad’s hand, walking down unfamiliar streets well past 8 at night—there is nothing like it!

I hope he kills them

This is the nostalgia I get from “Wolfman,” as we get plenty of shots of spooky suburbs, mysterious neighbors, and big middle American porches stuffed to the brim with pumpkins. A low key start for your Halloween viewing.

Top 10 Tuesday: Autumnal Occasions

In sports, writing on 09/25/2012 at 14:37

Fall has been here almost a full week. What do we have to look forward to?

10. Sports
NFL

Fall is one of the best times of the year to be into sports. The MLB World Series quickly turns into the start of the NBA season, with the most exciting parts of the NFL schedule forming the backbone of it all. Not to mention the Tennis Masters Cup in November. What, I’m alone on that one?
