A throwback to a legendary writer, rest easy Ms. Lee.
Harper Lee announced today that this summer she will release a sort-of sequel to 1960’s To Kill a Mockingbird. Assuming the novel comes out around July, Go Set a Watchman will mark the Pulitzer Prize winning author’s second work of long fiction in more than half a century.
There are a number of reasons to be excited about this book, and just as many reasons to worry. First and foremost, this is Harper Lee we are talking about, perhaps the greatest single-book writer of all time. Mockingbird works on too many levels to name, an episodic children’s book that also functions as a cohesive work of adult themes, politics, racism, murder, social excommunication, sexual development, and so much more. To re-enter Maycomb, simply put, would be a joy, and alongside Scout Finch, no less.
